Tom is a founding partner of Secant IP where he helps clients develop practical intellectual property strategies grounded in both technical understanding and business judgment. With more than two decades of experience in intellectual property law, his practice centers on US and international patent prosecution and also includes ex parte reexamination, licensing, IP due diligence, and opinions concerning infringement, validity, and freedom to operate.
Tom has represented startups, mid-sized and multinational companies, independent inventors, and Nobel Prize-winning researchers. His work spans a range of technologies with particular experience in software, computing systems, medical devices, and consumer electronics.
Before becoming an attorney, Tom spent nearly a decade working in software development, systems analysis, and technology implementation. He held roles with Radiant Systems, later acquired by NCR, and Ashland Petroleum. He developed software, managed development projects, and integrated enterprise applications across web-based, mobile, and specialized computing platforms. This hands-on technical experience helps him quickly understand complex technologies and resolve the legal and business issues that matter most to his clients.
At Secant IP, Tom has helped build a focused IP boutique around a simple model – experienced lawyers working directly with clients, while combining technical fluency with practical judgment and cost discipline.
Prior to founding Secant IP, Tom was a partner at Finch & Maloney and practiced with Lando & Anastasi in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Tom earned his JD, magna cum laude, from the Franklin Pierce School of Law, his MBA from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and his BS in Computer Science, with High Distinction and Departmental Honors, from the University of Kentucky. He is registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office and is admitted to practice in Massachusetts.
